Dan Malone

Dan MaloneDan’s Meat Market opened in Downtown Whitewater just before Labor Day 2007. Founded by Dan Malone and his daughter Heather Malone, it is the culmination of a thirteen year project.

While working full time for the City of Jefferson, Dan began raising beef and has grown the heard to over 100 head. During this time Heather was very involved in the operation as well as 4-H and other agriculture projects at school. She has won numerous awards at the Jefferson County Fair as well as the State Fair and has had entries in the Governors Auction at the State Fair. She completed the Agriculture program at UW-Madison in the spring of 2007. They have a long family history in the Whitewater area, Heather being 5th generation here.

Over the last few years, Dan took some courses in sausage making and experimented at home with a home built smoke house to perfect his recipes. He also completed a course in entrepreneurship offered through UW-Whitewater where he learned to write a business plan, how to market his business and gained much other valuable information. One of the several very smart things Dan did while opening his business is he reached out to some students (business majors) at the university here. They not only helped him with some construction but also assisted with his business plan and gathering needed paperwork and other information. Dan sees the university as a great resource and is always eager to work with students.

The store is part of a trend, the new, old way of thinking. They are the complete operation from the farm to the consumer. It is a true family business with everyone pitching in when needed including Dan’s wife, brothers and friends. Finished in knotty pine with many antiques on the wall they have been successful in giving it that old time feel. Windows in the processing area allow the customer to watch their steaks being cut and sausage being made from grinding and stuffing to the smokehouse.

Their customer service is outstanding. There is no order too large or too small and they are happy to honor custom requests. Dan is an astute listener, giving people what they want as is evidenced by his hours of operation till 7:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday and even 10 am – 2 pm on Sunday. He is working with local restaurants to provide them with products they need, including the Double Dip Deli, the Coyote Grill and others.

They sell a full range of meat products and cheeses from Bledsoe Cheese and Chippewa Valley Cheese both in northern Wisconsin. Heather raises farm fresh chickens and has a recipe corner in the store to provide ideas for the customers. Offerings also include farm fresh organic eggs, spices and seasoning blends, venison processing and back yard smokers. Value added products include many types of sausage as well as Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Parmesan, and various stuffed and marinated meats. Also, once again Dan worked with a college student who set up a small gift box business and sold holiday gift boxes on campus and in the area featuring Dan’s products.

Dan has a full time certified meat cutter, works the business much himself and has created 4 FTE jobs. He has a tremendous amount of pride in his business and his community. He and family and friends did much of the needed construction work in the store which was completely stripped and remodeled to fit his purpose. He had to meet all the necessary codes in order to obtain his licenses.

During the construction phase he took time to help the Whitewater Youth Baseball League with one of their biggest fund raisers at the 4th of July celebration. He made his sausage in another licensed facility since his wasn’t ready yet and supplied them with Polish sausage and beef snack sticks. It was also a great way to announce that he would be opening since he is located directly across the street from where the celebration is held at our Cravath Lakefront Park.

Dan’s Meat Market has had a very positive impact on the downtown. This is the first time in over 40 years that this type of product and service has been available in the Whitewater area. Not only has it has brought local people back to the downtown that don’t usually shop downtown but he has a far reaching draw from other communities and has regular customers that travel to downtown Whitewater from Janesville, Eagle, Palmyra, Elkhorn, Delevan, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson and even Northern Illinois to name a few.

Dan’s Meat Market has been a tremendous addition to our business mix and we are happy to have him in downtown Whitewater.
